Bio-identical Hormone Therapy

Bioidentical hormones are hormones that are chemically identical to those the human body naturally produces. They are often derived from plant sources, such as soy or yam, and are structurally identical to the hormones produced in the human body. These hormones can be used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to help address hormonal imbalances, typically during menopause, perimenopause, or andropause, as well as for other conditions related to hormonal deficiencies.

Bioidentical hormone therapy is created on a patient-by-patient basis. Dr. Saam will use your own samples to work with a compound pharmacy in customizing hormonal therapy compounds that are specific to each patient’s body chemistry.

Common Bioidentical Hormones:

  • Estrogen (Estradiol, Estrone, Estriol): Used for symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.
  • Progesterone: Often used alongside estrogen to balance the effects of estrogen, reduce the risk of endometrial cancer, and help with sleep disturbances and mood swings.
  • Testosterone: Used in both men and women to address low libido, energy levels, and muscle mass.
  • DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone): A precursor hormone that the body converts into estrogen and testosterone; sometimes used to boost energy and improve mood.

Forms of Bioidentical Hormones

Bioidentical hormones can be administered in various forms, including:

  • Topical creams or gels: Applied to the skin.
  • Patches: Worn on the skin for continuous hormone delivery.
  • Sublingual tablets or lozenges: Dissolved under the tongue.
  • Oral pills: Taken as a regular medication.
  • Pellets: Small implants inserted under the skin that release hormones over time.
  • Injections: Hormones delivered directly into the bloodstream.

Benefits

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is often considered to be more tailored to individual needs, as the hormones can be adjusted based on specific symptoms and blood tests. Additionally, some people report fewer side effects with bioidentical hormones than with synthetic versions, though this can vary from person to person.
